The record-breaking amounts of snow left over from the winter are melting slowly and limiting access to some National Forest lands. A new area to dump rocks left from rockfalls and mudslides has been designated along Highway 133 in the Crystal River Valley. The Horseshoe Bend Rock Dump will replace a controversial dumping area known as the Placita Rock Dump. Colorado Department of Transportation crews stopped using the Placita site in the Fall after it was decided dumping there negatively impacted animal migration routes, habitats and scenic views. Garfield County has a growing Latino population. As of the 2006 census, Latinos comprised 23% of all County residents. Despite those numbers, participation from members of the Latino community in town and county affairs is limited. Those who work closely with new immigrants say they think the main problem is the rumor mill. But members within the community say that's not the only reason people shy away from civic participation. High school students from around the Valley will show off their art curating skills at a special exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum. The show called "Wasted," is the culmination of nine months of hard work by 15 local teenagers. The fire broke out around noon on Tuesday on County Road 100 also known as Catherine Store Road.

More than 300 homes were threatened at the height of the blaze. Aspen Public Radio's Victoria Foley reports.


Members of the Emma Caucus are completing the first draft of their master plan -- it calls for more restrictions on developers when it comes to density and size. The plan still needs to be approved by Pitkin County staff and Commissioners but could go into effect later this year.

Morning Newscast: Wednesday April 16, 2008Aspen Public Radio News TeamLocal news from AspenHIGHWAY 82 AND COUNTY ROAD 100 OPEN TO TRAFFIC

At 3 o'clock this afternoon, emergency officials opened Highway 82 and County Road 100 after the roads had been closed and restricted due to a wildland fire. Evacuation orders were also lifted for all areas with the exception of the Roaring Fork Preserve and May Fly Bend subdivisions.

The fire started around noon yesterday 1 1/2 miles east of Carbondale. It is 70% contained. The blaze has burned 1000 acres and has ignited 3 structures. One citizen was hurt and recieved burns to his hands.

Carbondale Fire officials estimate nearly 300 structures were threatened by the fire and 150 to 200 people were evacuated from the area yesterday.

47 agencies assisted in fire fighting and structure protection.

Morning Newscast: Monday April 14, 2008Aspen Public Radio News TeamLocal news from AspenFrontier Airlines is ready to enter the Aspen market despite the announcement it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.

In February, the carrier announced service to Aspen. As Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports, it took a few months but Frontier's low ticket prices have engendered some competition in the marketplace and the carrier plans to carry on.


After 51 years in business, the curtain came down on the Crystal Palace in Aspen Saturday night.

The theater known as much for its Victorian decore as the sardonic and political wit infused performances is now dark.

Starting next month, some Pitkin County residents will recieve a phone call asking them to rate the County and consider potential ballot measures. Morning Newscast: Monday April 7, 2008Aspen Public Radio News TeamLocal news from AspenOfficials with the oil and gas industry are voicing concerns about proposed rules to regulate their activities in Colorado. The State Oil and Gas Conservation Commission issued draft rules last week as part of a mandated restructuring of the Commission and how it oversees the industry. Members of a group representing about 80% of the oil and gas operators in Colorado say they take issue with two of the draft rules. They expect to have more concerns as research into the proposal continues. Aspen Public Radio's Victoria Foley reports.

In the future, visitors to Independence Pass will likely see new signs, permanent bathrooms and improved trail systems. The enhancements are part of a corridor management plan. Currently, the plan is being discussed by groups including the Forest Service and the Independence Pass Foundation. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials say they will continue to monitor areas like Independence Pass and Highway 133, but mitigation projects will likely be put on hold. The organization English in Action began as a project of the Basalt Regional Library over a decade ago. The venture can be credited with teaching English to hundreds of foreigners in the Valley, primarily Latinos. Three years ago, the group broke off from the Library to become a non-proft group. As the organization grew, so did the waiting list for students desiring to be matched with a tutor. Now, English in Action is providing drop-in English classes. Residents also voted against the Town's purchase of the Pan and Fork Mobile Home Park land. The ballot measure to buy the $5 million piece of property lost by a mere ten votes but the issue gained plenty of attention during the campaign. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

Results in the Carbondale Trustee election were close last night. Seven candidates were vying for four seats on the Board of Trustees. Ultimately, Pam Zentmyer, John Hoffman, Ed Cortez and Frosty Merriot were victorious. Aspen Public Radio's Victoria Foley reports.

The property's owner, Owen Minney, had said he would demolish the historic structures because they kept him from selling the property. Limits to construction work this summer in the Town of Snowmass Village were the cause of some grumbles at a meeting last week. New rules call for a shorter period of time construction work can be done in the right-of-way and a limit to how much noise is produced at construction sites.

The Aspen Community Foundation granted more than $7 million last year. That number is up from $4.8 million in grant money given out in 2006. The increase is primarily due to one type of donor.

A new recreation and community center in Carbondale will open in a few weeks. The fitness and event facility has gone from plan to reality in just over one year. Aspen Public Radio's Victoria Foley reports.
